Description

Excavations were undertaken in two phases ahead of the development of a shopping precinct (Culver Square) with service basement. The area was divided into ten sub sites. Due to time and financial limitations three approaches were adopted towards the excavation of these sites. An area was either: a) fully excavated top to bottom, b) had the post-Roman and latest Roman levels examined before machine stripping and examination of the Boudican and earlier deposits or, c) machine stripped down to the Boudican levels which were quickly cleaned and planned. The excavations revealed prehistoric activity, structures of the Roman fortress, town defences, Boudican destruction levels, 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th century AD structures, Anglo-Saxon huts, dark earth and medieval / post-medieval buildings.<1>
