Full Description
During excavations at Culver Street between 1981-2 and 1984-5 (ECC337), a Roman building situated on the east side of Insula 34 was examined. The building was a substantial town house which was very similar in plan to the main range of rooms of the building immediately to the north (MCC894) but did not have the same quality of floors. The wall foundation, although largely robbed, were also of similar type with three stretches surviving intact to floor level. There was also a close correspondence with the plan of the preceding building from this site (MCC816).
A total of seven rooms were identified. Internal features included sandy clay floors, a hearth, pits, one with a neo-natal baby burial (MCC1111) inside it, a gully, and stake-holes. A notable feature of the building was a large hypocaust in a room on its south side. This may have been a later addition to the building.<1>
