Full Description
During excavations at Culver Street between 1981-2 and 1984-5 (ECC337), a possible early medieval hut (SFB or Grubenhaus) (Colchester ?Hut 4, EF166) was discovered in the form of a rectangular pit with three evenly spaced post holes along each of the sides. The pit measured 5.5 x 2.8m in area and 0.4m deep, although it had probably been truncated by later cultivation. The building was cut by a 12th to early 13th century pit and appeared to cut an east-west robber trench of late 11th to early 12th century date. It seems most likely that the hut belonged to the 12th century although it could have been Anglo-Saxon (6th to 8th centuries).<1>
