During excavations at Culver Street between 1981-2 and 1984-5 (ECC337), an east-west street of the colonia was discovered. The street was situated between Insulas 26 and 34 to the north of an earlier military street (MCC761). The bulk of the new metalling for the street took the form of a strip of gravel between 6 and 7m wide, leaving a gap of about 4m (i.e. the road surface of MCC761), to the south and 3 metres to the north for footways (see MCC819 and MCC822).
Following the Boudican revolt the street was completely cleared of debris, and was remade with a thick layer containing pieces of tile and mortar probably acquired from the robbing of the plinths from military buildings. The street was then surfaced with gravel and periodically repaired or resurfaced (p.65).
Along the northern edge of the street a shallow trench contained a wooden water-main (MCC798), adjacent to which were two shallow grooves which may have also contained water-mains. Further to the north along the side of the footway (MCC822) a trench dug along the side of the street acted as a road drain (CAT AF159).
Little of the metalling from the period between c.AD 100-300 survived. The street was drained during this time by two series of ditches on the north and south sides and two possible timber drains on the north and south sides (see MCC1066 and MCC1068). All the drains appeared to have silted up with material from the layers of metalling that they were cut into. At a later date the ditches on the south side of the street were replaced by two other ditches.<1>
