Full Description
During excavations at Culver Street between 1981-2 and 1984-5 (ECC337), an east-west footway of the Colonia was discovered. The footway was situated between the north side of a street (MCC812) and an open area on the south side of Insula 26. The street had been laid out following the foundation of the Colonia with a gap of 3m to the north presumably set aside for the footway. The street and footway were separated by a roadside drain. The footway was represented by a thinly metalled surface.
Following the Boudican revolt the footway was cleared of debris and during the second and third centuries AD, it was defined on the south side by a substantial foundation which had been completely robbed in the early medieval period. The footway was 0.5m narrower than its equivalent on the other side of the street (see MCC819).<1>
