Full Description

During excavations at Culver Street between 1981-2 & 1984-5 (ECC337), part of a Roman legionary barrack block (CAT Building 80) was excavated. The barracks were situated facing north on the west side of the via principalis (MCC760), south of an E to W street (MCC763) and lay back to back with another barrack block (MCC758).

All the internal features of the building had been destroyed by cultivation of the area in the years after the Boudican revolt. The main plinths had also been robbed during this time although the lowest parts of the plinths of the west and south walls survived in situ. To the west of the north-south plinth was an area of gravel metalling which was on the presumed site of the barracks easternmost contubernium.<1>
