Full Description

During excavations at Culver Street between 1981-2 and 1984-5 (ECC337), the western part of a small stone-built building was excavated. It was a small buttressed stone structure which had stood in the middle of a cultivated area (MCC855) on the east side of the former via principalis (MCC760) within Insula 35.

Internally the building measured approximately 5.5 x 7.0m. All that survived were the un-robbed foundations which were about 1.0m deep and constructed o stone and mortar. The north and south walls each contained three buttresses, whilst the west wall incorporated two. 'Its plan and context indicate that it was almost certainly a tower-granary.

Following the buildings demolition its site appears to have been cultivated and used for a corn-drying oven (MCC926).<1>
