Full Description
During excavations at Culver Street between 1981-2 and 1984-5 (ECC337), an Anglo-Saxon hut (SFB or Grubenhaus) (Colchester Hut 3, BF4) was discovered following machine stripping of the topsoil in the south-west corner of site B.
The base of the hut had been dug through the tessellated pavement of a Roman building (MCC894). The hut was of the two post type with the sunken area of the hut measuring 3.9 x 3.1m. This area served as the floor of the building. Lines of stake-holes penetrated the hut floor suggesting at least two internal structures of wattle. 'The absence of a hearth and any substantial accumulation of occupation debris suggest that the floor was used for work rather than domestic proposes'. Some of the stake holes may have been associated with looms.
The surrounding Anglo-Saxon ground surface had been destroyed by later cultivation but various datable finds were recovered from the hut (MCC2592).<1>
