Full Description
During excavations at Culver Square between 1981-2 and 1984-5 (ECC337), a large Roman military building (CAT Building 85) was briefly examined. The building was situated along the eastern side of the via principalis (MCC760), north of the Via Sagularis (MCC479) and to the south of another building (MCC776).
There was little chance to examine the building and any remains which did survive had been badly affected by the post-Boudican cultivation of the site. Construction trenches were noted in three places but there was no hint of any postholes.
This large square or rectangular building was interpreted as being one of the eight buildings which normally occupy the scamnum tribunorum of Roman legionary fortresses. The building was demolished and succeeded by a new building (MCC787) prior to the Boudican revolt.<1>
