Full Description

During excavations at Culver Street between 1981-2 and 1984-5 (ECC337), a north-south footway was discovered situated between the former via principalis (MCC760) and a large Roman house (MCC923). The footway formed a passage along the west side of the house and continued around the northern side (see MCC1076). The south end of the passage on the west side of the house was open whilst at the north end there was a cross wall. The foundation of the west wall of the passage on the west side incorporated an arched masonry drain and a timber drain ran down the middle of the passage taking waste away from the house to the east (MCC923).<1>
