Full Description
During excavations at Culver Street between 1981-2 and 1984-5, the remains of an east-west footway was discovered situated between two buildings (MCC780 and MCC782) and an east-west street (MCC733). The footway was well preserved containing lenses of occupation make-up and gravel up to a depth of 0.15m. The south wall of the footway appeared to have been built at the same time as the buildings so that it may have been an integral part of them. It rested on a timber ground-plate burnt during the fire of AD 60/1. Along the outside of the south wall was a timber drain (MCC790) which linked up with a north-south drain (MCC791) at its east end. The surface of the footway was cut by three pits (see MCC773).<1>
