Full Description

During excavations at Culver Street between 1981-2 and 1984-5 (ECC337), a large Roman house was examined situated along the southern edge, and probably fronted onto the west side of Insula 34, at the rear of the town rampart (MCC1170). The building butted onto two other buildings (MCC905 and MCC918) and appears to have been of two phases.
All that was available for examination was part of an east-west wing and the excavation of this was limited. Four rooms and part of a passage were uncovered.
Foundations were formed from mortar and gravel/septaria filled trenches. The floors were tessellated. To the north of the building was a lightly gravelled open area with a wall foundation (MCC1112) on the west side which may have been from a room belonging to the building or from another building fronting on to the west side of Insula 34.
