Full Description
During excavations at Culver Street between 1981-2 and 1984-5 (ECC337), a Roman timber-framed building (CAT Building 103) was discovered situated on the south side of an east-west street (MCC733) and to the east of the former via principalis (MCC760).
Interpretation of the building remains was complicated by the fact that the relevant remains had been largely removed by machine stripping.
The position of the frontage wall of this, and three other buildings (see MCC863, MCC865, MCC866) was indicated by a series of pits for posts. There was no clear evidence to suggest the footway (MCC788) between the frontage wall and the street had been an integral part of the buildings.
A slot indicated either the presence of a north-south passage in the west side of the building or (less likely) that there had been a small gap between it and the adjacent building (MCC866).<1>
