Full Description
During excavations at Culver Street in 1981-2 & 1984-5 (ECC337), an east-west military street was discovered which lay to the west of the Via Principalis (MCC760), and between two Barrack Blocks (MCC758 and MCC759). The street had been in use before being metalled as the surface beneath the earliest metalling contained impressions of what were interpreted as wheel ruts and a bovine animal lying roughly parallel with the street.
The later metalling of the street was cut by an east-west slot (MCC771) about 1.0m south of MCC758 and along the outside wall of MCC759 was another slot (MCC772) both of which were interpreted as timber drains. Following the Boudican revolt the street was resurfaced and the old drains were replaced (MCC1017 and MCC1018). It divided the two cultivation plots (MCC827 and MCC853) before finally being built over at the beginning of the 3rd century AD.<1>
