Full Description

During excavations at Culver Street in 1981-2 & 1984-5 (ECC337), a north-south military street was excavated which ran parallel and to the east of the via principalis (MCC760), and east of an east-west military street (MCC779). The metalling of the street was patchy and existed only to the north of the junction with the east-west street (MCC779) where it sealed a group of indentations (see MCC773) probably produced by the removal of vegetation during the construction phase of the legionary fortress (MCC477). The street had a shallow drainage ditch running along its west side adjacent to the courtyard building (MCC775). This was sealed by the latest metalling. The street was built over c.AD 50/55 (see MCC785) following the foundation of the Colonia in AD 49.<1>
