Full Description
During excavations at Culver Street between 1981-2 & 1984-5 (ECC337), part of a Roman legionary barrack block (CAT Building 82) was excavated. The barracks were situated on the west side of the via principalis (MCC760), south of an E to W street (MCC764) and immediately north of the Via Sagularis (MCC479).
Only the centurions quarters were excavated; few internal features survived and most of the mortared plinths had been robbed in the period immediately after the Boudican revolt.
However at least three compartments were recognisable from the slots which held partition walls. A later slot contained the charred remains of a timber ground-plate burnt during the destruction of the Boudican revolt in AD 60/1. Another slot contained some stake holes suggesting the wall had been of the stake-and-wattle type. To the south of this slot was a small hearth.
The survival of the building remains had been badly affected by post-Boudican robbing of the mortar plinths and later Roman cultivation.<1>
