Full Description

During excavations at Culver Street between 1981-2 and 1984-5 (ECC337), a late medieval cellar was excavated (CAT Building 129). The cellar probably belonged to an outbuilding behind a house which fronted onto Head Street.
The cellar was constructed entirely of random-coursed septaria apart from the west end where the entrance was formed by two neatly-made jambs of narrow brick. The cellar floor was made of trampled earth. Access to it was via a rectangular pit but no evidence of steps/ladder or stairs survived. The latest datable material from the backfill of the cellar and pit was early 16th-century.<1>
