Full Description
During excavations at Culver Street between 1981-2 and 1984-5 (ECC337), the remains of at least one timber-framed building were examined although their dating and interpretation were problematic. The remains consisted of a collection of slots, post-pits, postholes and stake holes which lay east of the via principalis (MCC760), north of another building (MCC787) and on the site of an earlier military building (MCC776).
The remains formed 'no plan which could be rationalised in a meaningful way in terms of one or more buildings'. There was no thick deposits of Boudican destruction debris on the site and it may be that the building (s) wasn’t burnt during the fires of AD 60/1.
The floors of the building (s) were of daub and seemed to have stopped in roughly the same position as the west side of the earlier military building. Most of the slots probably contained timber ground-plates and elsewhere a north-south strip of daub may have been the sole example of part of a wall that survived in situ. Along the east side of the wall was a line of neatly-spaced stake holes. At least two hearths were identified within the building (s). An oven and the grave of a baby (see MCC792) were also located. Three slots to the west probably represented an annexe or separate ancillary building which encroached on the edge of the street.<1>
