Full Description

During excavations at Culver Street between 1981-2 and 1984-5 (ECC337), a building (CAT Building 128) represented by a series of post-pits of uncertain date was excavated. 'It was probably a utilitarian building standing in the garden of a house fronting in Head Street to the west'. Unfortunately, the site's stratigraphy had been largely destroyed when the ground level was lowered during the construction of Rebow Chambers in the 19th century.
There were about 30 post-pits in all, a few containing clearly visible post-pipes and some forming a recognisable rectilinear plan. Dating evidence was difficult to assess and it is possible that the building belonged to the 11th or 12th centuries.<1>
