Full Description
During excavations at Culver Street between 1981-2 and 1984-5 (ECC337), the remains of a timber-framed building belonging to the period between the foundation of the colonia and the Boudican revolt were examined. Interpretation of the remains was difficult and was compounded by the fact that some of the ground-plates had been removed during clear-up operations after the Boudican destruction. The building was situated over the site of an earlier military building (MCC776), on the south side of an east-west street (MCC733) belonging to the new colonial street grid and between two other buildings (MCC783 and MCC785). It had a footway running along its north side (see MCC789).
Little of the structure could be excavated but the floor was of daub and the walls were supported on single timber ground-plates set in slots. The walls were either of the 'stud-and-wattle' or the 'daub-and-block' type. Six rooms or compartments could be identified. Internally the building contained many hearths which were probably the result of industrial activity of some sort. Room 1 contained five hearths, Room 2 contained a single hearth or oven, Room 3 contained four hearths, Room 4 contained four hearths and Room 5 may have had one central hearth. Room 6 contained various stake holes and pits of an indeterminate nature.
The building was destroyed during the Boudican revolt but the Boudican destruction debris was very thin and in some places absent.<1>
