Full Description
During excavations at Culver Street between 1981-2 and 1984-5 (ECC337), a Roman building (CAT Building 96) was discovered situated on the west side of the former via principalis (MCC760) to the south of another building (MCC811) and north of an open area used for cultivation.
The limits of the building were well defined by lines of gravel-filled pits which appear to have acted as a form of foundations for walls, all traces of which had been destroyed during the construction of foundations for a later building. Other walls were suggested by slots, a shallow foundation of septaria chips and post pits. Internal features included an oven, four small post-holes. An open area to the east of the building was suggested by midden-like deposits and an absence of gravel filled pits. In this area was a bowl shaped oven (MCC773).<1>
