Full Description

During excavations at Culver Street in 1981-2 & 1984-5 (ECC337), an E to W military street was excavated which lay to the west of the via principalis (MCC760) and north of a Barrack Block (MCC753).

The street was relatively narrow (maximum of about 6m) and the gravel metalling was 0.15m thick. Situated between the street and the barrack block to the south was a drain lying east-west (see MCC766). Further to the west (Culver Street Site B) the metalling was only 0.10m thick. At this point the make-up for the street sealed a thin gravel layer which rested on the natural sand and may have been an earlier temporary street. Along the southern edge of the street was a narrow gully which sloped from west to east and was probably a drain (see MCC773). The street was replaced by another street (MCC812) after the foundation of the Colonia.<1>
