Description
Rescue excavation in advance of the construction of a large annexe terraced into the hillside to the south of the main school building. Excavation began in July 1984 on the eastern side of the site (Site A) and was expanded westward in January 1985 (Site B). The excavations finished in April 1985, by which time 1,040 square metres had been investigated. Post Roman topsoil on the site was stripped by machine as were some Roman levels on Site B. Open area excavation revealed a well-preserved but comparatively shallow (usually under 1 metre thick) series of archaeological deposits. Some trenching was carried out on the edge of the site and a limited programme of environmental sampling was undertaken from the Boudican deposits and some pits. <1><2>
