Full Description
During the Gilberd School excavations in 1984-5, remains were found for a building situated to the south of the demolished eastern end of Barrack Block 1 (MCC332) over the site of MCC338. Following the demolition of the eastern end of MCC332, trenches dug to remove the external walls were sealed by a thick layer of dump and the area immediately to the south was subsequently sealed by a thick layer of make-up to form a platform for the new building.
The structural remains of the building were slight and consisted of four shallow north-south slots and a single east-west slot. Two of the slots contained charred timber fragments which were probably from ground-plates although the slots were unusually close together and may have floor joists. The floor was of sandy clay and was sealed by a patchy occupation layer. Two groups of pile holes located to the east may have indicated that the building extended towards frontage of the north-south street (MCC346). However, the building was destroyed during the Boudican revolt and no associated floor levels or Boudican destruction survived at this level.<1>
