Full Description
During the Gilberd School excavations between 1984-5, the southern edge of a timber-framed structure dated to the pre-Boudican colony was excavated (CAT Building 135). Only a narrow strip of one room was available for excavation, situated immediately to the north of the re-used western end of barrack block 1 (MCC332). This was interpreted as the rear of a building which fronted onto the east-west street (MCC349) and occupied the plot immediately west of another building (MCC350).
The walls of the building were set in shallow slots, although a plinth from MCC332 was apparently reused as a basis for the formers south wall. A charred timber ground-plate and some decayed timber survived and the walls were thought to have most probably been of the stud-and-wattle type. The floor was formed from a sandy clay and was sealed by an occupation layer scorched during the Boudican destruction AD 60/1. Environmental samples recovered from the floor (ECC2257) suggested that the building had been used either to house animals or that hay had been spread on the floor.
The building was destroyed in during the Boudican revolt.<1>
