Description
During the excavation of the Gilberd School Site in 1984-5, samples were collected for environmental analysis from the Boudican destruction layers, from some 1st century military contexts and from 2nd to 3rd century rubbish pits. The samples were processed in a bulk sieving/flotation tank with 0.5mm meshed to collect the flot and 1mm meshes to retain the residue. The samples included a number of cereal grains and carbonised fruit stones came from the Boudican layers. Samples from the 1st century military features and 2nd to 3rd century pits were sparse and not interpretable. Timbers used in the construction of early colonial buildings were recognised and a sample from the medieval lime kiln showed that shells were being used as raw material for laime burning.<1>
