Full Description
A small timber-framed building of the pre-Boudican Colonia was discovered at the Gilberd School Site, 1984-5 (CAT Building 134). The structure was rectangular and had been on a flat area of natural sand and partly overlying the demolished area of Barrack Block 1 (MCC332). Prior to its construction the east end of the Barrack Block 1 had been demolished, partially robbed out and sealed by dump. The building was situated in the north-east corner of Insula 17a fronting onto the north-south street (MCC346).
Remains of the building included ground-plates, a well-defined burnt floor, charred stumps of posts and decayed timber in post holes. The external walls were probably constructed of stud-and-wattle as some of the Boudican destruction debris contained wattle impressions. Tiles in the destruction debris suggest the roof was tiled. There was no evidence of internal divisions within the building although the central part appears to have been divided into three bays. The buildings floor consisted of disturbed natural sand which was sealed by a thin occupation layer scorched in AD 60/1.
Finds from the building included a number of quality metal objects which together with the structures size and plan suggested it did not have a 'straightforward domestic function'.
The structure was burnt down during the Boudican revolt AD60/1.<1>
