Full Description
A large Roman foundation was discovered during excavations at the Gilberd School in 1984-5. The foundation was orientated east-west and cut a number of dump layers dated to the late 1st century. The foundation was situated in the north-east corner of the site just to the south of the east-west street (MCC349).
The foundation was approximately 1.0m wide and 1.3m deep and was constructed of compacted gravel sealed by a layer of septaria fragments. The northern edge was faced with large dressed septaria blocks and a possible buttress had been added on the north side. 'These features probably formed a revetment wall intended to counteract the effect of the natural slope,' although together with MCC360 it could have supported the walls of a single-celled building in the corner of Insula 17a.<1>
