Full Description

During the excavations at the Gilberd School in 1984-5, a 0.8m deep casting pit was discovered in the south east corner of the site. On the east side, a substantial structure had been built which survived to a height of 0.6m and which formed a central firing area open at both ends. The structure was of two main phases and the evidence suggested that at least five casting operations had taken place. Unfortunately the mould fragments recovered were undiagnostic but the casting waste suggested that all the material was bronze.<1>
