Full Description

During the excavations at the Gilberd School in 1984-5, a lime kiln comprising a large circular pit, 3.4m in diameter and 1.0m deep was discovered immediately to the east of MCC362. On the west side, there was a small raking-out pit. Internally, the pit sides and base were intensely burnt and contained a deposit of crushed and burnt sea shells, the raw material for the roasting process. Traces of quick-lime and charcoal fragments were also found. There was evidence for only one phase of use, dated to the 12th-13th centuries.<1>
