During excavations at the Gilberd School in 1984-5, an east - west military street between Barrack Block 1 (MCC332) and Barrack Block 2 (MCC337) was partially excavated (Period 1: c.AD 44-49). Only the eastern end could be examined in detail where it was found to be 5m wide. The extreme eastern end of the street, beyond the end of the barrack blocks to where it met the north-south street (MCC346), had not been properly levelled or consolidated and the street did not appear to have been metalled over its whole length although a substantial layer of street metalling, approximately 0.25m thick, was observed at the streets western end.

The street does not appear to have seen much use and may have been treated as a cul-de-sac off the via sagularis to the west. The apparent erection of some kind of structure, with occupation layers, over the east end reinforces this conclusion (see MCC338).

A timber drain (MCC342) extended along the north side of the street and a less regular east-west drain (MCC343) also lay along the southern side of the street between it and Barrack Block 2 (MCC337).<1>

Excavation by masters and boys from the Gilberd School which revealed a short length of Roman stone-and-mortar plinth of military date and street metalling.<1><2>
