Description
Excavations were carried out during the winter of 1927/8 by the Essex Archaeological Society under the direction of P.G. Laver. The excavations took place as a result of the gift of Hollytrees and its grounds to the Corporation. Work began on 21st October 1927 under P.G. Laver on the understanding that work was to cease on 29 February 1928. Access to the area was restricted and all that could be done within Insula 15 was to clear the hypocaust and cut exploratory trenches on the 'Mithraeum' site. Within Insula 7 the importance of the gate and drain was shown. These had first been uncovered by Dr P. M. Duncan. His trenches were emptied prior the examination of undisturbed deposits. Work was resumed in July 1928 (see EVT3101). <1>
