Full Description

A short section of Heath Farm Dyke which survives in the wood at the back of the Church of Jesus Christ and the Latter-Day Saints, Straight Road (see MCC2095 for Heath Farm Dyke Middle). A ditch runs north-east to south-west with a low bank on the south-east side; bank and ditch are approximately 10m wide and from the bottom of the ditch to the top of the bank is approximately 1.5m. This is part of the dyke numbered 1 on the plan in Colchester Museums `Roman Colchester'.<1> The dyke runs between Lexden Straight Road and Gilwell Park Close. The whole monument carries a growth of deciduous trees and low thorn.<2>

This dyke, broadly enclosing the Gosbecks area is now substantially destroyed. A short stretch survives in this wood.<3><4> The dyke survives partially as field boundaries, partially cropmarks. One small section, TL 968236-969237, is upstanding and scheduled as Essex 147.<5> AP<7>

Scheduling revised April 2002 now Scheduled Monument 29458.<8>

Site Assessment (date unknown) = Overgrown with trees and brambles in chestnut woodland.<1> The bank should be repaired by dumping sufficient clean soil or gravel to make an even appearance and discourage future erosion. If something can be erected to deter vehicles going too near it this would be helpful - also pointing out that it is an ancient monument.<6>

A proposal document for the work by the waste disposal company.
Correspondence and watching brief report from the waste company and archaeological monitors and contractors.
Watching brief report concluded it was highly unlikely of survival of archaeological deposits due to the area being quarried prior to its use as landfill.
