Monument record MCC7284 - Oliver's Dyke, Stanway
Summary
Dyke, aligned N to S, from the south end of Kidman's Dyke South (MCC7283) running south through farmland to the Roman River and continuing beyond as Layer Dyke, c.1.5km in total length. A short c.330m-long section survives as an earthwork, in Chest Wood on the south side of the Roman River.

Full Description
Section of dyke aligned N-S through farmland to the Roman River for c.560m and continuing beyond for c.1km as Layer Dyke. The southern part of the scheduled stretch has been ploughed away. Numbered 3b on the plan in Colchester Museums `Roman Colchester'.<1><2> It joins Kidman's Dyke to the north.<3><4>
Three sections have been excavated across the southern section of the dyke (Layer Dyke) in 1961 by B.P. Blake.<10>
Site Assessment = The southern part of the scheduled stretch has been ploughed away and shows as a soil/crop mark to the south of Chest Wood.<1>
