Full Description

The earthwork in Bluebottle Grove is part of Lexden Dyke (site 11628). The ditch and part of the bank were sectioned at the request of the HBMCE to provide information about the monument which would help in the formulation of a management strategy. The ditch proved to be 4.0m deep and 10.5m wide. The bank survived to a height of 1.5m. <1> <2>

Site Assessment = This section of the dyke is fenced on both sides. To the west is a housing estate whose gardens extend right up to the ditch. A footpath runs along the bottom of the ditch. The bank does not seem to be so heavily wooded, however felling of the trees has resulted in large holes which have been exacerbated by children playing and erosion around felled stumps. Failure to keep the bank turfed has increased the erosion. Dumping of garden refuse from gardens backing onto the ditch is creating large heaps which disfigure and confuse the profile of the ditch and bank. <3> THe ditch is visible for the full length of Bluebottle Grove but the rampart has almost disappeared and is likely to be worn even more by the footpath
