Monument record MCC9144 - Lexden Heath

Summary

Historic heath shown on the 1777 Chapman & Andre Map and shown on the County Series at 1:2500 Scale Epoch 1 Map (1874-1887). There does not appear to be a distinct boundary between Lexden Heath and Stanway Heath (MCC9143); they simply merge together to form one very large area of heathland (262 ha. in area) on the early maps (Lexden on the east side, Stanway on the west). The heath uses/incorporates several of the N to S dykes into its boundaries.

Full Description

Lexden Heath is originally shown on the 1777 Chapman & Andre Historic Map, located where the settlement of Lexden is now. The heath is shown on this map to be an irregular shape, with an area of 178.1ha. The map shows a number of buildings on the edge of the heath. However, as none of these buildings have been listed it is difficult to tell if any of them survived. The heath was originally connected to Stanway Heath, and although they both have separate names, it is impossible to tell on this map where one heath ends and the other begins. <1>

Lexden Heath is then shown on the County Series at 1:2500 Scale Epoch 1 Historic Map (1874-1887), which shows the heath to be a lot smaller and more compact than it used to be. It is now very rectangular in shape and has shrunk to an area of 41.00ha. The heath is no longer connected to Stanway Heath, as it seems to have lost some of its land as well. In modern times the heath seems to have disappeared completely, with only pockets of similar land surviving. This is due to increased urbanisation. The site has seen a high amount of archaeological work over the years, and has five dykes running through it. They are Gryme's Dyke, Prettygate Dyke, Kidman's Dyke, Triple Dyke and Heath Farm Dyke. <2>
