Description
Two phases of rescue excavation north of 133-136 High Street were undertaken in advance of development of the High Street frontage. The shallow foundations proposed for the new buildings made it unnecessary to dig much below the top of the Roman archaeology. The site revealed at least one substantial, mid second century Roman house, a late 3rd century coin hoard, 'dark earth' and 11th to 14th century pits. There was also 14th to 17th century building activity and the investigation included building recording of 136 High Street. <1><2>
