Description

Environmental samples were taken from a Roman pit, seven medieval pits and six contexts associated with Tudor ovens and hearths. The Roman pit produced charcoal, uncharred elder seeds, bone fragments and scraps of marine mollusc shell. The medieval pit fills included charcoal, some charred cereals, hazel nutshell, weed seeds, remains of bracken and heather, uncharred sloe, bramble and elder fruit stones/seeds, in some cases mineral-replaced plant material and mineral- replaced faecal concretions, mammal, bird and fish bones, avian eggshell and marine mollusc shell. In both periods, refuse and latrine pits were represented. The oven fills produced charcoals, including gorse/broom and heather, with other macrofossils apparently of secondary origin. The report has not been published.<1>
