Investigations by Colchester Archaeological Group and directed by P.R. Holbert, in St Mary's Rectory Garden. Ten test pits (6ft. by 6ft.) were excavated ahead of the redevelopment of the rectory gardens for a new theatre. Numbers 1, 2, 5, and 9 were located at the southern end of the site in search of possible buildings fronting onto the street. Pits, 3, 8 and 10 were positioned to find traces of a north-south street noticed by Mr. J. Bligh while excavating on the southern side of Church street (ECC941). Pits 4 and 7 were positioned in the hope of picking up any features in the general area between the aforementioned pits and the Balkerne Gate complex. Structural remains recovered included first and second century buildings and a tessellated pavement and walls from a fourth century building. Evidence of a first century pottery kiln and medieval occupation was also recovered in addition to the street. <1><2>
