Full Description

A Roman tessellated pavement discovered during excavations by Colchester Archaeological Group at St Mary's Rectory, Colchester, in 1965 (ECC942). The pavement was laid on a bed of mortar over a clay foundation. The pavement had been repaired in places with white cement. It appeared to have originally spread further to the north. This pavement together with several adjacent walls (MCC2034, MCC2035, MCC2036, MCC2037) and a tessellated pavement (MCC2039) were interpreted by the excavator as belonging to a 4th century 'dwelling house'.<1>
