Description
Three trial holes were dug by the Colchester Archaeological Trust to determine the depth of the uppermost surviving Roman deposits ahead of the construction of a Day Nursery by Essex County Council. The trenches indicated that the Roman material lay 0.7-0.8m below the modern surface. During the construction of the building, various drains and other services penetrated the Roman material and these were recorded where possible. The area beneath the new building was stripped to a depth of 0.7ms and the Roman remains recorded. Three soak ways, a cess pit and various service trenches were dug at various points on the site and cut through archaeological deposits. The archaeological material recorded included a Roman street with buildings either side, burials and post-Roman pits.<1>
