Full Description

During groundwork for a new day nursery in the grounds of East Hill House in 1983 (ECC526), the inhumation of an adult male was discovered. The grave was one of two (see also MCC1474) cut into the layer of a Roman dump or floor (see MCC1479). The grave was small and roughly oval and contained well preserved bones, the body being orientated roughly north-south. The skull had been detached from the body and been placed between the legs. Radiocarbon dating produced a result of bp 1700+ or -70. These burials would appear to form part of a group of late Roman, low status burials found inside the walled town.<1>
