Full Description

During groundwork for a new day nursery in the grounds of East Hill House in 1983 (ECC526), the inhumation of an eighteen month old infant was discovered. The grave was one of two (see also MCC1473) cut into the layer of a Roman dump or floor (see MCC1479). The grave was small, shallow and roughly oval with the body being orientated roughly east-west. The skull had been detached from the body and been placed between the legs. These burials would appear to form part of a group of late Roman, low status burials found inside the walled town.<1>
