Watching Brief and limited excavation on the Essex Section of the Bures to Gt. Horkesley Pipeline

Evidence for Roman features and structures, medieval and postmedieval features.

Medieval house (CAT Building 33), outside of the walled town and adjacent to Medieval Bastion 8 (MCC2716), recorded during the excavations at Lion Walk between 1971-4.

Built in 1820-1, nave and west tower cement rendered.

Church was restored in 1869-70, when the north vestry and the organ chamber were added and the south porch was rebuilt.

C14 church, chancel of early C19 on C14 foundations.

The farmhouse, now demolished, was a C16 building.

After the Roman wall tilted outwards (see 12246), a pit was dug behind it.

The only Colchester church recorded in Domesday sited at the major Roman and Medieval road junction.

The church was damaged in the earthquake of 1692 and probably soon after the windows of the aisles were remodelled.
