Full Description

After the Roman wall tilted outwards (see 12246), a pit was dug behind it. Hull suggests this was dug at the time of the siege, during the Civil War, in 1648. A `festoon' of dirty gravel could be remains of a firing step. The pit was filled. A foundation trench for a parapet or boundary wall was cut at a time when small bricks were in use, just above the Roman wall (probably this was done when East Hill House was built (c.1710). On top of this was a modern wall. Finds included clay pipe and pottery. <1>

A magnetometer and topographic survey was carried out in the grounds of East Hill House. A negative linear anomoly running N-S is possibly a street, revetment, or terrace.<2>
