Excavation of the 'Mithraeum' site during a second season of excavations continued from 1927/8 in the Hollytrees Meadow (see ECC793). The work was carried out by Essex Archaeological Society under the direction of Rex Hull. After excavating the whole of the Mithraeum, exploratory trenches were cut outwards from the SW angle of the structure, in search of the east – west street. No trace of the street was found although a Roman wall slot was recovered and a post medieval rubbish pit. A second trench was cut eastwards from the SE angle to the wall of the Hollytrees meadow. Two Roman wall slots were recovered. A third trench was cut diagonally SW from a point on the west wall of Room A of the Mithraeum and this too revealed a Roman wall slot together with a Roman rubbish pit. A small rectangular building lay outside the last wall. It was also possible to uncover the whole of the drain, cut sections of the street and explore a little farther for houses. <1>
