Full Description

A north-south Roman street between Insulas 7 and 8 (same as MCC1849?). The street was discovered during excavations in 1928/9 (ECC795). The street was sectioned revealing that the metalling was 28ft. wide and about 2ft. 6in. thick at the centre, steeply cambered to about 6in. thick on each side. Two periods of construction were noted as well as repairs. The street was laid over a clay make-up deposit containing pre-Flavian pottery. One layer was dated to the time of the Boudican destruction at which point there was no street metalling. The west side of the road was bounded by a drain (MCC1515) whilst to the east was a large block of septaria with mortar (MCC1837) the 'remains of a building or of the wall of the adjacent Insula'.<1>
