Description

Excavations were carried out in response to construction of an extension to the Telephone Exchange behind St Martin's House (between North Hill and West Stockwell Street), Colchester. A large basement was excavated to a depth of 15 ft. and the area affected measured 44 ft. 6 in. by 40 ft. Unfortunately, only limited investigations could be made including a careful trial trench along the south side of the site. A second trial trench along the west side of the site was attempted but could not be investigated properly. Roman remains recovered included N-S and E-W streets, pits, building foundations and walls.<1>
