Following the demolition of No. 5 Balkerne Gardens, the site was excavated in the summer of 1965. The area available for excavation was restricted by the need to conform to the building plans and by the presence of water and electricity mains running east-west across the site. As a result it was only possible to excavate a six foot wide east-west trench across the south of the site and two other trenches across the west of the site. In addition three machine cut trenches were opened on the north side of the site at the end of the excavation (pers com. Ros Niblett, 27/10/2000). Four phases of activity were identified and included several Roman pits, ovens and at least two buildings. <1>
