Full Description

A Roman oven discovered during excavations at Balkerne Gardens in 1965 (ECC659). The oven consisted of a small, rectangular, tiled hearth, surrounded by small stake holes which probably held a wattle and daub superstructure. The oven was one of three (MCC1588, MCC1591) located on a clay floor (MCC1596). Numerous pieces of iron slag found on the clay surface suggested that the ovens may in fact have been small smith's furnaces.<1>
